Insights from the 2024 IAFP Annual Meeting in Long Beach, CA
The 2024 International Association for Food Protection (IAFP) Annual Meeting, held in the vibrant city of Long Beach, CA, was a monumental event that brought together food safety professionals, researchers, and industry leaders from around the globe. This year's conference was a hub of innovation, collaboration, and groundbreaking discoveries, setting a high bar for future gatherings. Our team from Q included Daniel Bowen, VP of Sales and Marketing, Benjamin Bastin, Director of Operations, and Erin Crowley, Chief Scientific Officer.
Insightful and Inspiring Technical Sessions
One of the core components of the IAFP Annual Meeting was the presentation of cutting-edge research and updates from key regulations from the FDA and USDA. Attendees were treated to a plethora of technical sessions covering a wide range of topics, including:
- Rapid Diagnostic Assays: Experts shared the latest advancements in rapid diagnostic technologies, showcasing how these tools are revolutionizing food safety testing.
- Emerging Pathogens: Researchers discussed the identification and control of emerging pathogens, providing valuable insights into preventing foodborne illnesses. Highlights included Salmonella serotypes of concern, Cyclospora, and Viral method development and Improvements.
- Method Development and Standard Harmonization: Presentations focused on the development of new methodologies and the harmonization of standards across the industry, ensuring consistency and reliability in food safety practices.
Our very own CSO, Erin Crowley, was part of the session, "Sample Pooling: Luring or Solution?" and presented, “The Practical Guide to Evaluating the Performance of Methods for Large Test Portions." Erin shared the stage with a Dream Team of global experts, Pam Wilger (Post Brands) and Dr. Alvin Lee (IFSH) along with moderators, Dr. Daniele Sohier (Hygiena) and Dr. PC Vasavada (U Wisconsin-River Falls). This session provided a clear guide to the implementation of proper sampling techniques by suppliers, proper validation of larger test portions for laboratories, and statistical implications of testing schemes for food safety and public health. The session was quite a success and had a packed house! An important topic with a lot of needs from the industry.
